MATIC vs POL
The MATIC to POL token migration represents the most significant upgrade in Polygon's history, marking the transition from a single Layer-2 chain to a fully multi-chain, zero-knowledge-powered ecosystem under the Polygon 2.0 roadmap.
The migration officially went live on September 4, 2024, with MATIC and POL exchangeable at a 1:1 ratio. The transition is designed to take place over four years, during which POL will gradually take over MATIC's roles across all Polygon chains.
POL's expanded utility includes the ability for validators to simultaneously secure multiple chains within the AggLayer while earning staking rewards from each. This is a significant improvement over MATIC's single-chain staking model.
Both MATIC and POL continue to trade on major exchanges. Holders of MATIC on supported exchanges were automatically migrated to POL, while others can use the official Polygon migration portal to convert their tokens. The total supply of POL is 11 billion, comprising 10 billion migrated from MATIC plus 1 billion newly minted for the Community Treasury.
